*Some* of the Toyota range would have gotten a Whereis map very late 00's from what was part of existing deals, however I don't believe they used a Whereis\TT map in the FJ at all.Īny local FJ's that didn't have the Toyota unit in it would have only been as the dealer would have had them swapped out, not something done by Toyota and is outside of Toyota's global agreements for map data supply.

Original contributors for the Australian base map in OSM came from older maps from government like PSMA and Geoscience Australia (from memory). Let alone the issues surrounding licensing such a product for commercial use (going against the whole point of OSM). Toyota would never have allowed a OSM product that is not an automotive grade offering in to their vehicles, Toyota'a QC is very in depth to say the least. That really hurt TT after Apple announced that. Whereis's (quite outdated) db was sold via another company and ended up with TomTom who used it as a basemap before sending their own vehicles out to collect and update their TT offerings in Australia, partly for Apple who had a deal with TT for (global) map supply to them for a couple years while they were busy making and then improving their own maps quietly in the background.

Well that's a lie, Whereis has been dead for a very long time, they also didn't use OSM, there could be overlap with data provided by PSMA and GSA though.
